Home Builders “Rescue” Fire Department

Hoernerstown, PA (September 1, 2010) When an emergency arises in South Hanover Township, members of the Union Deposit Volunteer Fire Department Company 47 spring into action. This time, it was Company 47 that needed help, Firemenand five area home builders came to the rescue.

The building at Station 1 in Hoernerstown had been in need of a new roof for years, but this year, the need became even greater because the building will be home to the new fire truck to be purchased via Dauphin County – Local Share Municipal Grant monies that were awarded to the Township. At a recent Township meeting, discussions took place about the urgent need for the roof, the costs involved and how to get the job completed. “I happened to be sitting in that meeting. Construction is our business, and South Hanover Township is part of our home building community. It was a no-brainer for us to step up to the plate to help,” said Paul Zimmerman, Land Acquisitions Director for Landmark Homes.

Working with thFiremene team at South Hanover Township, Landmark Homes reached out to several other builders in the area, and in total, five committed to supporting the project. Landmark Homes managed the overall project, ordered the materials and provided and scheduled the crew to do the work. All five builders - Custer Homes, E.G. Stoltzfus, Inc, Ensminger Builder, Landmark Homes, and Sheppard & Son Builders - supported the project financially by covering the cost of the labor.

"It’s heartwarming to see the community we help everyday reaching out like this to help us," said Ted Young, President of the Union Deposit Volunteer Fire Department. "It’s a great example of a community coming together as a team."
